Nairobi, Monday, 27th May 2024... Kenya Power has signed twenty-six contracts to implement Phase IV of the Last Mile Connectivity Project (LMCP) which is aimed at accelerating electricity access in the country.

The KShs.27 billion project is funded by the French Development Agency (AFD), the European Union (EU) and the European Investment Bank (EIB). It will connect a total of 280,000 new customers to the grid by November 2025.

“The connectivity project that we have kicked off today will significantly contribute to our drive to accelerate the electricity access rate in the country for economic development. The Vision 2030 development blueprint highlights the country’s goal to achieve universal access to electricity. in this regard, we are keen to ensure that this is attained through the implementation of a robust connectivity roadmap,” said Kenya Power’s Managing Director & CEO, Dr. (Eng.) Joseph Siror, FIEK.

The LMCP Phase IV project comprises three components namely; consultancy for supervision and management, works contractors and supply of metering accessories and prepaid meters. To onboard new customers, the project will entail maximizing connectivity around 3,735 existing transformers, extending medium voltage lines, and installing 940 new transformers.

The Last Mile Connectivity Project is anchored on the Kenya National Electrification Strategy that was developed in 2015 to speed up electricity access for households and businesses in Kenya. Kenya Power is the implementing agency of the project on behalf of the Government.

A total of 742,805 households across all the counties have been connected to the grid through the donor and government-funded Last Mile Connectivity Project since its launch in 2015. This success is primarily hinged on maximizing the efficiency of the country’s 35,000 distribution transformers by connecting every household within 600m of the transformer.

“The Last Mile Connectivity Project has enhanced Kenya's economic growth, by connecting institutions, businesses, and households. This has resulted in productivity and business expansion, improved healthcare services, and better access to education by connecting schools while at the same time enhancing living conditions across the country. Environmentally, deforestation has been reduced and renewable energy promoted, supporting sustainable development,” said Dr. (Eng.) Siror.
